Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic and
inflammatory disease. It may progress indefinitely and may not go
away completely. Its symptoms may disappear for some time but you
may encounter frequent flares. It is also a systemic disease. It
can attack other organs in your body such as the skin, blood
vessels, lungs, and heart.
It begins with the inflammation that affects the lining of the
joints called synovium. It can damage the joints if left untreated.
As a result, you end up with chronic pain, loss of function, and
eventually, disability.
Rheumatoid arthritis progresses in three stages. The first stage
happens when an unknown trigger activates the immune system, which
instructs the lymphocytes to send cytokines, their chemical
messengers, to the affected area. Lymphocytes are white blood cells
that are responsible for immune responses. This reaction causes the
swelling of the synovial lining where both ends of the bones meet.
This causes pain and stiffness around the joints.
The second stage begins with the rapid division and growth of
cells, or pannus. At this stage, the synovium become thicker and
you will experience more pain. In the third stage, the inflamed
cells release enzymes that attack the bone and the cartilage. As a
result, deformity of the bones and loss of mobility develops
besides increased pain.
Early diagnosis of this disease can help in fighting rheumatoid
arthritis more effectively. Medical reports suggest that aggressive
treatment in the early phase may stop the disease from progressing.
You have to be aware that all current treatments for this disease
primarily focus on reducing the painful condition. If possible,
they may prevent it from getting worse.
