Rheumatoid Arthritis Pain Relief With Minerals
During the attack, rheumatoid arthritis sufferers usually have
high levels of zinc, copper, iron in their blood and synovial
fluid. These minerals are anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory. Other
studies also suggest that boron is effective in rheumatoid
arthritis pain relief. In this article, we will look into
these four minerals and how they can effectively relieve the
symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.
Zinc
In some independent studies, patients were administered with
increased doses of zinc. They showed much improvement such as less
joint pain and less morning stiffness. Zinc improves protein
digestion as undigested protein can lead to inflammation. However,
in one of the studies, only six of 22 subjects experienced relief.
The researchers concluded that zinc alone could not provide much
relief. It has to work with other minerals for more effective
results. You need between 15 and 25 mg a day of zinc depending on
your arthritic condition. You should get enough zinc if you take
supplements of between 10 and 15 mg a day together with a zinc-rich
diet.
Copper
In one study, researchers discovered that copper in the synovial
fluid of rheumatoid patients was three times higher than normal.
During the attack, the copper volume in the liver falls. This shows
that the body needs more copper than usual. They believe that high
levels of copper help to reduce the inflammation. When the
inflammation is subdued, the copper levels drop. Instead of
supplementation, you can obtain copper from food. Copper
supplementation may cause side effects. These include change in
sense of taste and smell, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite,
abnormal blood clots, increased joint pain, chills, anemia, and
kidney problems. High dosages of copper can lead to cirrhosis of
the liver in patients prone to Wilson's Disease. Confirm with your
doctor that your body is not prone to storing excess copper.
Iron
Some sources say that iron supplementation can help to relieve
pain. Iron levels in the joint and synovial fluid are much higher
in arthritic patients compared to those without arthritis. In
addition, iron levels in the blood are usually low. This may show
that your body need larger amount of iron in fighting inflammation.
Once the attack is over, the levels of iron in the blood and
synovial fluid return to normal. However, in some cases, iron
supplementation may aggravate the condition. Therefore, it is safer
to take multi mineral supplementation to prevent the danger of
overdosing.
Boron
A study by University of Surrey shows that a boron deficiency is
related to rheumatoid arthritis. In New Zealand, patients
experience pain relief for rheumatoid arthritis with low doses of
boron. With supplementation of 6 to 9 mg of boron a day, 80 to 90
percent of his patients experienced improved symptoms within a few
weeks. Over dosages of boron can be toxic to your body. For safety
reason, eat fruits and vegetables that are rich in boron in
conjunction with the supplementation of boron not exceeding 3 mg a
day.
There is always the risk in overdosing from minerals. You should
not take more than is required. Always follow the guidelines set by
your doctor. Some minerals can make your arthritis conditions
worse. Getting minerals from your diet is the safest way in
achieving rheumatoid arthritis pain relief.
